Out with Old, In with the New

I heard somewhere once that Ray LaMontagne was quoted as saying (paraphrase) “I never listen to my first album, ‘Trouble’.” His reasoning was simple – although he enjoyed writing and creating the music for that album, it wasn’t anywhere near the depth of the music he writes now.

When I first heard that, I didn’t understand how he could think that way. Wasn’t he proud of his album? Wasn’t he satisfied with the outcome of months and years of hard work? It seemed so puzzling. After all, “Trouble” is the album that really brought him to the forefront of the folk music scene.

As our first album ages, I’m starting to grasp what Ray meant. While I will always love “American Folk”, I don’t think I’ll spend a lot of time salivating over it. Don’t get me wrong, I am SO proud of American Folk. We worked our rear ends off making it. It was almost a year in the making, and the finished product was well worth the wait. I love the songs – they are very representative of the emotions and feelings we were experiencing when we wrote them. The thing is, I really feel like we have moved on to “another tier” if you will. I wish that all of you could hear some of our new songs. Not only do I think they are musically more impressive, but I also think the writing has improved tremendously.

We have been writing so much since the release of American Folk that we already have enough for another album! I am SO excited to get in the studio and record these new ones. Without revealing to much, I think you will hear a MUCH fuller sound from the Trio. We have so many ideas and visions for how we want this next record to sound and feel. We want all of you to continue to be part of the process – look for many more videos and blog post from us in the future chronicling our 2nd full album.

For now, we will continue to push “American Folk”. We’ve heard great response from it so far. If you haven’t got a chance to pick up your copy yet, you can do so right here on our website! If you want to hear some of these new songs we’ve been working on…come to our shows! We are always adding new songs to our set lists as “trial runs” for the audience. I’m excited about the future of where our sound is heading, and I think you all will be too. The journey is a long one, but man has it been fun so far.

Happy Thanksgiving everyone! We are so thankful for your love and support! God bless!
